Counseling Program

House of Ruth seeks to address the trauma experienced by battered women and their children through our counseling programs. Counseling services are available for battered women and their children at the emergency and transitional shelters and at House of Ruth’s Outreach Offices.  Individual and group sessions assist women as they explore their options, plan for a future free of violence and develop methods to achieve the goals they have set.  Weekly counseling groups include Domestic Violence Support Groups, Journaling Groups, Children’s Groups, Healthy Relationship Groups, and various support groups in Spanish.

Child Abuse Treatment Program
Exposure to violence and abuse can contribute to children and teens expressing behavioral and emotional problems such as depression, lowered self-esteem, poor impulse control, fear, anger, aggression, defiance, withdrawal and anxiety.

The Child Abuse Treatment Program (CHAT) provides no-cost counseling and case management services to children from birth to 18 years of age who have experienced abuse, neglect or violence in their homes, schools or communities. The CHAT program was designed to be a safe and confidential place for children and teens to express their feelings, with individual therapists available to help children:

·          Identify and understand emotional issues

·          Learn coping skills

·          Process experiences related to violence

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an intensive treatment program designed to help caregivers and children address concerning behaviors. The focus of the program is to improve the interaction between caregivers and children through the use of PCIT-coached play techniques. PCIT teaches caregivers the necessary skills to handle problems, while children learn how to cope.

The PCIT program is composed of two parts:

·          Relationship Enhancement: caregivers are taught and guided on how to decrease negative interactions, increase positive ones, and build supportive communication with the child

·          Improving Compliance: caregivers are taught specific and practical interactive skills

Throughout the structured program, caregivers have an opportunity to practice PCIT methods with a child (and siblings) during therapy, and continue to apply these skills until mastery is reached and the child’s behavior is improved.

All counseling is offered in English and Spanish.
